In a bid to meet the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) requirement for additional airborne warning and control systems (AWACS), Bombardier Defense has proposed its Global 6000 business jet as a base platform for the Netra Mk1A, India’s next-generation indigenous AWACS. The IAF currently operates three Netra Mk1 AWACS based on the Embraer ERJ145 platform and had planned to acquire six more of the upgraded Netra Mk1A systems. However, production of the ERJ145 has been discontinued, raising challenges for the IAF in procuring new units on this platform.

Despite the Bombardier Global 6000’s advanced capabilities and proven role in similar configurations like the Saab GlobalEye, sources indicate that the IAF may still pursue the used ERJ145 market to maintain fleet commonality with its existing Netra Mk1 units.

The Bombardier Global 6000, a long-range business jet with an impressive endurance of up to 12 hours, offers nearly double the operational range of the ERJ145. This enables extended surveillance missions without refuelling, which is crucial for AWACS roles requiring sustained air coverage. The Global 6000 is also more spacious, allowing for a greater payload capacity that can accommodate advanced sensor arrays and electronic warfare systems. Additionally, Bombardier’s experience in supporting modifications for AEW&C configurations, as seen in the Saab GlobalEye, underscores the platform’s suitability for advanced surveillance needs.

The ERJ145, while limited in range and endurance compared to the Global 6000, has been a reliable platform for the IAF’s existing Netra Mk1 systems. Leveraging the ERJ145 again for the Netra Mk1A would ensure logistical continuity, simplifying maintenance and training protocols due to commonality with the current fleet. Furthermore, acquiring used ERJ145 units and retrofitting them with required AWACS systems could be more cost-effective than procuring brand-new Global 6000 jets.

However, should the IAF choose the Bombardier Global 6000, it would have access to a more capable platform for its AWACS fleet, potentially enhancing the operational scope of its airborne surveillance capabilities. Bombardier Defense’s commitment to supporting AWACS modifications and the Global 6000’s ongoing production are added advantages for long-term operational sustainability.
