India’s state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is set to expand its global footprint with the establishment of a new office in São Paulo, Brazil. This strategic move is driven by the Brazilian Army’s growing interest in acquiring a Medium/High Altitude Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system.

BEL, the manufacturer of the indigenous Akash and Akash-NG missile systems, has emerged as a strong contender for this lucrative contract. The company’s fortunes received a significant boost following a visit by Brazilian Army Commander General Paiva to India in August 2023. Impressed by a live demonstration of the Akash missile system, General Paiva has reportedly advocated for a Government-to-Government (G2G) deal to acquire the Akash SAM.

A pattern of contrasting narratives has emerged in the media. Indian outlets have highlighted a potential competition between the Akash NG and the Chinese-made Dragon 50 SAM, while Brazilian media has leaned towards favoring the Indian system, suggesting that the Chinese counterpart is technologically inferior.

BEL’s decision to establish a presence in Brazil is a clear indication of its confidence in securing the Akash NG contract. The company’s local office will enable it to provide comprehensive support to the Brazilian Army throughout the acquisition and operational phases.

This potential deal holds significant implications for both India and Brazil. For India, it represents a major export opportunity for its defense industry, while for Brazil, it offers an opportunity to enhance its air defense capabilities with a proven and technologically advanced system.
