India’s ambitious Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program is progressing towards its goal of rolling out the first prototype by the end of 2026 or early 2027. Developers at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) are not only focusing on building a state-of-the-art 5th-generation fighter jet but also ensuring it is affordable for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and appealing to global markets.

According to an ADA official speaking to idrw.org, the initial prototypes of the AMCA, equipped with maximum hardware to validate the program, indicate that the production model will be among the most cost-effective 5th-generation fighter jets available. The goal is to provide advanced capabilities—stealth design, sensor fusion, and superior avionics—at a competitive price point without compromising on quality or performance.

While exact production costs will depend on the final manufacturing arrangements, including partnerships with private sector entities, estimates suggest that the AMCA will be positioned as a value-driven alternative to other 5th-generation jets in the market.

To understand the potential affordability of the AMCA, it is helpful to compare it with other leading 5th-generation fighter jets. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is Widely regarded as the most prevalent 5th-generation fighter, with a unit price of approximately $82.5 million. Variants and customer-specific configurations can affect pricing.

Chengdu J-20 (China) is Estimated to cost around $110 million per unit, reflecting the premium associated with its stealth and advanced systems. While the Sukhoi Su-57 (Russia) Pricing details are not officially disclosed but are considered comparable to other 5th-generation fighters, likely exceeding $80 million per unit.

For the first time in India, a public-private sector joint venture is likely to spearhead the AMCA’s production. This collaborative approach is expected to optimize manufacturing efficiency and leverage the expertise of both sectors. Once bids for production are invited, clearer pricing will emerge, which will be a critical factor in ensuring the jet’s market viability.

With its advanced design and affordable pricing, the AMCA is poised to be an attractive option for countries looking to modernize their air forces without exceeding their defence budgets. The jet’s stealth capabilities, sensor suite, and combat readiness will place it as a strong contender in the competitive 5th-generation fighter market.
