The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has released an Expression of Interest (EoI) for a telescopic-type retractable refuelling system for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Air Force Mk-2 program. The LCA AF Mk-2 is being designed with a modern fuel system to meet its operational and technical requirements.

This system incorporates a retractable Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR) feature, utilizing a Telescopic Probe and Drogue system, enhancing the aircraft’s range and endurance for extended missions. The integration marks a key technological advancement for India’s indigenous fighter program.

The telescopic probe system is crucial for improving the LCA’s operational capabilities by enabling mid-air refuelling, thus allowing for longer sorties and reducing the need for frequent landings. This capability is essential for enhancing the Mk-2’s combat readiness and its ability to perform in diverse operational scenarios.

The EoI specifies that the desired refuelling system should be of the telescopic probe and drogue type. This system involves a probe extending from the receiver aircraft (LCA AF Mk-2) to connect with a drogue, or basket, towed by the tanker aircraft. The telescopic design allows for flexibility and ease of operation.

India’s LCA AF Mk-2, a larger and more powerful successor to the LCA Tejas Mk-1A, is seen as a vital component of the Indian Air Force’s modernization efforts. The retractable refuelling system represents a crucial step in making the aircraft a more versatile and long-endurance platform for future combat roles.
