In a groundbreaking move for India’s defense innovation, Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research & Technologies (NRT) has been tasked with developing the Naval Collaborative Combat Air Vehicle (N-CCAV), a project that aims to integrate unmanned aerial systems with the Indian Navy’s fighter jets.
The N-CCAV will be built upon NRT’s innovative “Abhimanyu” concept, a jet-powered, low Radar Cross Section (RCS) design intended to serve as a loyal wingman to the Navy’s MiG-29K and the forthcoming Rafale-M aircraft. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy through advanced human-machine teaming.
The contract with NRT stipulates a Minimum Purchase Quantity (MPQ), ensuring that once the N-CCAV reaches operational readiness, the Indian Navy will commit to procuring a specified number of these systems. The development of the Abhimanyu has commenced at NRT’s facilities, focusing on creating a lightweight, versatile drone capable of multiple roles.
The modular design of Abhimanyu allows for rapid adaptation to various mission profiles, which is crucial for modern warfare where agility and versatility are paramount. Its cost-effectiveness and expendability mean that the Indian Navy and Air Force can deploy these drones in large numbers, significantly augmenting their combat capabilities.
This architecture is open, scalable, and operations-oriented, designed to integrate future platforms, technologies, and concepts of operations (ConOps). This forward-thinking approach will allow the Indian military to continually evolve its strategies and equipment in line with technological advancements.
Designed to be smaller and lighter compared to other similar projects like HAL’s Warrior, the Abhimanyu N-CCAV will focus on Providing enhanced reconnaissance capabilities to extend the Navy’s operational awareness. Disrupting enemy communications and radars, offering a tactical advantage in electronic battlefields. Acting as an expendable asset for direct combat engagement.
Abhimanyu spec: AUW= 300 kg
Speed = 0.5 M
Endurance= 2 hours
Operational radius = 600 km
