Embraer, the Brazilian aerospace giant, has assured the Indian Air Force (IAF) of a high operational serviceability rate for its C-390M transport aircraft. This assurance is crucial as the IAF is considering the C-390M for its Medium Tactical Transport (MTA) tender, which could potentially lead to an order for 60-80 units.

To guarantee a consistent supply of spare parts and maintain high serviceability, Embraer plans to establish a global supply chain in India in partnership with Mahindra Defence. This strategy aims to reduce reliance on parts sourced from Brazil, ensuring uninterrupted operations for the IAF’s fleet.

The Brazilian Air Force, which currently operates six C-390M aircraft, has reported a remarkable serviceability level of over 97%. This impressive figure, despite the relatively small fleet size, is a testament to the aircraft’s reliability and Embraer’s maintenance capabilities. With 13 more C-390Ms on order and plans for further acquisitions, the Brazilian Air Force’s fleet is set to grow significantly.

If the IAF proceeds with the order for 60 C-390M aircraft, it will become the largest operator of the type worldwide, surpassing even the Brazilian Air Force. Embraer has committed to maintaining a serviceability rate in the 90s for the Indian fleet, which would be a significant improvement over the IAF’s current transport aircraft fleet, which often struggles to achieve a serviceability rate above 50% due to a large fleet of Soviet-era Transporters.

The only exception to this trend is the IAF’s fleet of 11 C-17 strategic transport aircraft, which consistently maintained a serviceability rate in the 90s. However, the C-17 fleet is significantly smaller than the proposed C-390M fleet, making the C-390M’s promised high serviceability rate even more impressive.
