India is closely monitoring Chile’s shipbuilding program and is keen to offer its expertise and capabilities to potential collaborations. A Chilean delegation is expected to visit Indian shipyards to explore opportunities for joint production with Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada (Asmar).
Both Chile and India operate Scorpène-class submarines, built by Naval Group. Chile’s Scorpène-class submarine, O’Higgins (SS-23), was constructed by DCNS in Cherbourg and Navantia in Cartagena, Spain.
India’s Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) has a wealth of experience in submarine construction, having built six Kalvari-class submarines. With plans for three more, MDL is also offering spare parts and overhaul services to potential partners, including Chile.
A joint venture between India and Chile in the shipbuilding sector could lead to significant benefits for both countries. India’s advanced shipbuilding capabilities combined with Chile’s strategic location in the Pacific could create a strong partnership for regional and global naval development.
