Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is gearing up to significantly enhance its manufacturing capabilities through substantial investments in automation technology. This strategic move is aimed at reducing the acquisition cost of future fighter jets, particularly the upcoming Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The Indian Ministry of Defence is concurrently engaged in discussions with a private sector company to integrate it into the final assembly line of the AMCA, scheduled to commence production in 2033-34. This collaboration marks a significant step towards leveraging private sector expertise in the aerospace domain.
The global aerospace industry has increasingly adopted automation, with measurement-assisted assembly (MAA) and part-to-part methods emerging as key technologies. By incorporating drilling processes during part manufacturing, the need for traditional craftsmanship in assembly is significantly reduced. Moreover, collecting interface data through metrology enables the creation of digital twins, facilitating the identification and correction of part discrepancies using additive manufacturing.
The AMCA, as a fifth-generation fighter jet, demands unparalleled precision in fuselage manufacturing to achieve the desired stealth characteristics. Unlike its fourth-generation predecessors, which tolerated minor variations, the AMCA’s stealth coating and radar-absorbing materials necessitate stringent tolerances.
HAL’s focus on automation aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and underscores the company’s commitment to technological advancement. By adopting these cutting-edge manufacturing processes, HAL aims to position itself as a global leader in aerospace production.
