India’s underwater ambitions are set to take a leap forward with the development of a new class of Kalvari-class submarines. These next-generation vessels, to be constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), will boast significant improvements over their predecessors.
The new submarines will be considerably larger than the previous six Kalvari-class submarines built for India. Measuring a full 10 meters longer at 77.56 meters compared to 67.56 meters, these extended vessels will likely offer increased space for crew, weaponry, and advanced onboard systems.
Three of these new Kalvari-class submarines will be equipped with a revolutionary Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). This AIP system, based on fuel cell technology, will allow the submarines to remain submerged for extended periods without needing to surface for air, significantly enhancing their underwater endurance and stealth capabilities.
Technological advancements are a key theme for these next-generation submarines. They will integrate improved propulsion systems, enabling them to travel farther and faster than their predecessors. Additionally, the incorporation of Lithium-ion batteries promises increased energy efficiency, reduced need for snorkelling (exposure above water for air intake), and faster recharge times.
These advancements translate into a strategic advantage for the Indian Navy. The extended underwater endurance offered by the AIP system will allow for longer patrols and covert operations. The increased range and efficiency will further strengthen India’s maritime capabilities.
India’s Project-76 will see the development of 12 Next-Gen submarines based on the Indigenous design and will borrow some of the latest techs that are to be incorporated into the Second-gen Kalvari-class submarines.
