Several Indian companies, Including Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), have set their sights on participating in PT PAL Indonesia’s upcoming Scorpène submarine production. This interest stems from India’s own experience with the Naval Group’s technology transfer program, which successfully enabled the domestic construction of six Kalvari-class (Scorpène) submarines.
As per information provided to idrw.org, Many Indian MSMEs that have participated in the Kalvari-class (Scorpène) submarine program have told Naval Group that they can supply much of the equipment that will be required for local manufacturing of the latest variant of the Scorpène submarines that Indonesia will acquire.
The Indian defence industry believes its experience in local Scorpène production can be a valuable asset to Indonesia’s project. MDL, having built all six Kalvari-class submarines domestically, possesses in-depth knowledge of the Scorpène platform and the intricacies of local production. This expertise could be crucial for PT PAL in streamlining its own Scorpène construction.
For India, collaborating on Indonesia’s Scorpène project offers several advantages. Firstly, it would provide Indian shipyards with the opportunity to work with the latest variant of the Scorpène design. This firsthand experience would be invaluable since India has decided to pursue the purchase of additional, more advanced Scorpène submarines in the future.
Secondly, participation in the project would help Indian shipyards, particularly MDL, retain their Scorpène-related expertise. With the construction of the six Kalvari-class submarines now complete, this collaboration would ensure their workforce remains up-to-date on the latest technologies and processes.
