The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up to host its first-ever multinational air exercise, Tarang Shakti-2024, this August. The event, featuring participation from ten countries including the US, Germany, and France, is set to be a stage for a fierce competition between Boeing and Airbus for a lucrative aerial refueling contract.
The IAF is actively seeking to bolster its aerial refueling capabilities, aiming to acquire six new tanker aircraft to complement its existing fleet of Il-78MKIs. This push comes as India seeks to project its airpower further and maintain operational flexibility in its vast region.
Both Boeing and Airbus are eager to secure this significant deal. Boeing is planning to showcase its KC-46A Pegasus aerial refuelers alongside a visiting US Air Force delegation participating in Tarang Shakti. Airbus, on the other hand, will leverage the participation of the German Air Force, which will be demonstrating its Airbus A330 MRTT during the exercise.
Adding a twist to the competition is India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). HAL, in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), is proposing a domestically developed solution – converted Boeing 737 aircraft equipped with Israeli refueling kits.
While a final decision on the acquisition program is awaited, the IAF is considering a stopgap measure. They are reportedly planning to lease a single Airbus A330 MRTT from the French Air Force to bridge the gap until a permanent solution is chosen.
The upcoming multinational exercise presents a unique opportunity for both Boeing and Airbus to showcase their aerial refueling capabilities directly to the IAF decision-makers. The performance of these aircraft during Tarang Shakti could significantly influence the final contract award.
