Oliver Burkhard, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), has proposed an intriguing prospect for India’s shipbuilding industry. If TKMS is chosen for the Indian Navy’s Project-75I tender, Burkhard envisions India becoming a hub for TKMS submarines in the Asia-Pacific region.
TKMS has joined forces with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) to submit a bid for Project-75I. This collaborative effort focuses on building six advanced submarines for the Indian Navy, with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 45,000 crore.
Burkhard’s vision extends beyond simply supplying submarines. He proposes establishing a robust Indian ecosystem for the U-212 model. This would involve sourcing parts and components from Indian suppliers for submarines manufactured not only in India but also in other locations by TKMS.
TKMS has offered a complete Transfer of Technology (ToT) package for the six submarines to be built in India. This comprehensive knowledge transfer would empower India to develop its own indigenous submarine construction capabilities.
If TKMS’s proposal is accepted, India could reap several benefits:
- Growth in Submarine Expertise: The ToT would significantly enhance India’s expertise in submarine design and construction.
- Establishment of a Submarine Hub: India could potentially become a leading centre for U-212 submarines in the Asia-Pacific region, attracting business and fostering technological advancements.
- Boost for Domestic Suppliers: Indian companies would be able to become part of the global supply chain for TKMS submarines.
