The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is taking a significant step towards developing high-energy laser weapons. Through its Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), DRDO has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting Indian vendors to participate in the design and development of a Large Aperture Beam Control System (LBCS) for a High Power Laser (HPL).
Located in Hyderabad, CHESS is a DRDO laboratory dedicated to research and development in the domain of high-energy systems and futuristic weaponry. This EOI signifies India’s commitment to developing Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) as a part of its ongoing defence modernization efforts.
DEWs utilize high-powered lasers to neutralize targets such as personnel, missiles, drones, vehicles, and optical devices on land, air, or water. Their primary advantage lies in their silent and precise operation, eliminating collateral damage and leaving no physical debris.
DRDO has actively pursued research and development in DEWs over the past few years. Their goal is to create weapon systems with varying power outputs (up to 100 kilowatts) for effective engagement at short, medium, and long ranges.
This EOI by CHESS presents a valuable opportunity for Indian companies to contribute to the development of cutting-edge defence technology. Collaboration between DRDO and domestic vendors will be instrumental in achieving self-reliance in this critical domain.
The successful development of a Large Aperture Beam Control System is a crucial step towards operationalizing high-power laser weapons in India. This initiative holds immense potential for strengthening India’s defense capabilities and deterring future threats.
