In a strategic move to bolster its defence capabilities, India’s State-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is gearing up to address the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) requirement for Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA). As reported by idrw.org, HAL is not only contemplating developing its offering but also exploring the possibility of collaboration with established Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in the aerospace industry.

The IAF, cognizant of the need to modernize its fleet, is in the process of refining the specifications for the MTA following thorough studies. It aims to replace the ageing Soviet-era An-32 and IL-76 transport aircraft by mid-2035, as highlighted by recent statements from the IAF chief.

In response to the IAF’s Request for Information (RFI), several renowned aerospace companies have stepped forward with proposals. Lockheed Martin has offered its esteemed C-130J Hercules, Embraer has put forward the C-390M, while Airbus has pitched its A400M. Notably, all three contenders are committed to establishing local production facilities in India in collaboration with private sector companies, underscoring the growing trend of indigenous manufacturing in defence projects.

However, HAL’s entry into the fray signals a potential game-changer. Despite limited options for collaboration in the realm of military transport aircraft development, HAL is exploring partnerships with various international players. One potential avenue is with Korean manufacturers for their MC-X tactical transport program, boasting a payload capacity of 30,000kg. Another option lies in rekindling ties with Russia, specifically through its Ilyushin Il-276 program, despite India’s withdrawal from the project a decade ago over engine selection concerns.

Looking beyond traditional partnerships, HAL may also consider tapping into the expertise of Japanese aerospace technology. The Kawasaki C-2 presents an intriguing option with its mid-size, twin-turbofan engine configuration, offering long-range capabilities and the capacity to carry payloads exceeding 40,000kg.
