Charanjit Singh Channi, the Congress candidate from Jalandhar and the former chief minister of Punjab, found himself in the middle of controversy once more on Saturday, May 25, when he gave a statement during a news conference at his home.

According to Channi, in order to increase medical tourism in Jalandhar, if the Congress were to win control of the central government, they would invite citizens of Pakistan to seek medical care in Punjab by opening the border between India and Pakistan. This declaration comes after the Election Commission of India warned Channi recently over his earlier this month offensive comments.

Channi referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Jalandhar rally as a “flop show” during the press conference. Given India’s recent history, his comments about the opening of the Wagah Border sparked curiosity.
