Speaking at a press conference on indigenization in the Navy, Naval Vice Chief Vice Admiral SN Ghormade said Our aim is indigenization and the Navy is ready to buy local weapons and products even if meet only 95% of our requirements. Ghormade also said that the Navy encourages the procurement of local systems over imports and the idea is that we develop some capabilities here and build capabilities for indigenization in the future.
The Navy is interacting with many private defense startups to come up with local products in robotics and drones which might be an interest of the Navy and many recent orders to private sector companies back this claim. Sources close to idrw.org have informed us that the Navy has deputed a small batch of officers who regularly interact and monitor many of the private sector products that are under development and even chip in with their expertise to get products that the Navy wants from them.
The Navy sees a lot of potential in Indian private sector startups that have cropped up in the defense sector recently and have announced many ways from which they can secure funds to develop their products. Recent assurance from the top officials of the Navy will be reassuring to the private defense sector startups.
