According to report in Tribune News Service, The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to purchase approximately 200 advanced night vision goggles (NVGs) for its fleet of Russian Mi-17V5 and indigenous Dhruv helicopters in order to enhance their operational capability.

The new third-generation variant NVGs, categorised as critical equipment for flying operations in the dark, will be purchased only from local suppliers, as per IAF officers.

The IAF’s Mi-17s are already fully equipped with Russian NVGs, that will be replaced with indigenously built devices, and the project will be carried out by the No.3 Base Repair Depot in Chandigarh.

NVG is indeed a helmet-mounted electro-optical device that uses image intensifier technology to produce images even when the light level is approaching total darkness.
