In a significant move to bolster defence relations between India and the Maldives, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Maldives Defence Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon held pivotal talks in New Delhi on Wednesday. These discussions were aimed at infusing new “vigour” into the defence cooperation between the two nations, with a strong emphasis on enhancing maritime security, information exchange, and the capability-building of the Maldives National Defence Forces (MNDF) through focused training initiatives.
The primary objective of the talks was to deepen cooperation in areas that are crucial for both countries’ security interests, particularly maritime security. The Indian Ocean, being a vital strategic and economic zone, is a key area of concern for both nations. The discussions were centered on how to strengthen maritime surveillance, share critical information, and increase interoperability between the armed forces of the two nations, especially in light of the growing security challenges in the region.
One of the focal points was to enhance the training capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Forces. India, with its well-established defence training infrastructure, has been a key partner in providing training and mentorship to the Maldives’ armed forces, ensuring that they are well-equipped to tackle evolving security threats. These initiatives will help the MNDF become more self-sufficient and capable in safeguarding the nation’s interests.
In line with the growing defence cooperation, India handed over defence equipment worth Rs 35 crore (approximately $4 million) to the Maldives at their request. The equipment included essential utility vehicles and berthing items, among other items, which will help enhance the Maldives’ defence infrastructure and capabilities. This gesture underscores India’s commitment to supporting its neighbours in building their military capabilities, especially in critical areas of transportation and logistics, which are vital for effective defence operations.
India has been a consistent partner in providing defence platforms to the Maldives, aimed at strengthening its surveillance and emergency response capabilities. India has already provided the Dornier aircraft and maritime vessels to the Maldives, which have proven crucial for various operations, including surveillance and medical evacuations. These platforms are critical for maintaining security in the Indian Ocean region, where both countries face maritime threats and challenges. Furthermore, discussions also touched on the maintenance and lease extension of these Indian aviation platforms in the Maldives, ensuring that the equipment continues to serve its purpose effectively for years to come.
