Squadron Leader Prathamesh D. Dongre of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was among eight officers decorated with the prestigious Vayu Sena Medal on India’s 76th Republic Day, celebrated for his remarkable act of bravery and skill in handling a near-catastrophic aircraft malfunction.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Defence detailed the incident that led to this honor. On May 10, 2024, while piloting a MiG-21 Bison for an operational mission, Squadron Leader Dongre faced an immediate crisis post-takeoff when the aircraft experienced a Main Hydraulic Failure. This malfunction critically compromised the control over the aircraft’s flight surfaces, including the flaps, ailerons, and landing gear, which are vital for safe flight operations.
Adding to the complexity, the failure caused the intake cone to stay extended, reducing engine thrust by limiting available power. This scenario dramatically increases the risk of losing control over the aircraft, especially during landing, where precise control is paramount.
Despite the perilous situation, Squadron Leader Dongre demonstrated exceptional composure. He wisely decided to abort the mission, redirecting all his focus towards safely bringing the aircraft back to base. The challenge was to execute a flapless landing, a maneuver that requires pilots to approach at higher speeds due to reduced lift capabilities, thus demanding both expertise and nerve.
Landing the MiG-21 Bison without the aid of flaps is notoriously difficult, as it alters the aircraft’s landing dynamics significantly, requiring a longer runway to safely decelerate. Squadron Leader Dongre’s successful execution of this emergency procedure under such adverse conditions was a testament to his training, courage, and quick thinking.
For his outstanding display of gallantry, decision-making under pressure, and skillful aircraft management, Squadron Leader Prathamesh D. Dongre was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry). The medal was presented during the Republic Day celebrations, recognizing his contribution to the safety and honor of the Indian Air Force.
