Span’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will be coming to India likely this year to further boost economic and defense cooperation between the two countries after Spain climbed up the ladder and is now the sixth largest trading partner with India. Sanchez also has agenda to push for the sale of the S-80 Plus series of submersibles that has been offered to India under Project-75I.
Spanish-owned Navantia is one of the three OEMs that meets most of the technical requirements for the six-generation submarines that the Indian Navy is seeking to procure and Make in India under Transfer of technology (ToT).
The S-81 submarine, the first of the S-80 Plus series of the Spanish Navy only this year started sea trials and four submersibles S-82, S-83, and S-84 are under construction but S-83 will first submersible that will get the AIP system that has been bone of contention for the Indian Navy due to which French and Russian offers were disregarded due to unproven AIP system.
