The United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) has announced that the development of the Sukhoi Su-75 “Checkmate” is approaching its final stages, setting the stage for its introduction into the international arms market. This revelation comes from Sergei Korotkov, a senior official at UAC, who emphasized the aircraft’s status as a fifth-generation, single-engine stealth fighter jet, according to Russia’s TASS news agency.
The Su-75 “Checkmate” is designed to be a cost-effective yet advanced combat aircraft, aiming to compete with other fifth-generation fighters like the F-35 Lightning II from the U.S. and China’s Shenyang FC-31.
India has been identified as a primary target for the Su-75’s export strategy. India has long been a significant buyer of Russian military hardware, with a strong relationship in defense procurement. Russia sees India not just as a market but as a strategic partner. : The relatively low cost of the Su-75 compared to other fifth-generation fighters could appeal to India, which is under pressure to modernize its fleet while managing defense budgets.
Russia’s offer includes potential technology transfer and local production, which aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative aimed at boosting indigenous defense manufacturing. With regional security concerns, particularly vis-à-vis China and Pakistan, India requires advanced, cost-effective aircraft to maintain aerial superiority. The Su-75 could fit these requirements, offering stealth and multi-role capabilities.
