Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh will launch two indigenously built frontline warships INS Surat, a Project 15B destroyer, and INS Udaygiri, a Project 17A frigate on May 17 at Mazagon Docks in Mumbai. INS Surat is the fourth of Project 15B class of ships that are the next-generation stealth, guided-missile destroyers of the Navy being built at Mazagon Docks.

INS Udaygiri is the third of Project 17A frigates that are equipped with improved stealth features, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems. Under Project 17A a total of seven ships are under construction–four at Mazagon Docks and three at Kolkata’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.

Both Project 17A and Project 15B class of ships are designed in-house by the Directorate of Naval Design and 75 % of the equipment and systems were sourced from indigenous firms including micro, small and medium enterprises.
