In a significant development for underwater warfare, Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Diehl Defence are set to redefine submarine self-defense with their Interactive Defense and Attack System (IDAS). This innovative system, which allows submarines to engage aerial threats while submerged, has caught the attention of several countries, including India, which is poised to leverage this technology in its naval expansion plans.

Traditionally, submarines have been vulnerable to aerial threats like ASW helicopters equipped with dipping sonar and lightweight torpedoes. IDAS breaks this paradigm by enabling submarines to counter these threats without breaking the water’s surface, thus maintaining stealth.

The system integrates into the submarine’s existing torpedo tubes, using a fiber-optic guided missile that can be controlled from within the submarine. This control allows for precise targeting and even mission abort if necessary, all while the submarine remains hidden beneath the waves.

The technology behind IDAS is based on the proven IRIS-T air-to-air missile system, adapted for submarine warfare. This adaptation provides a unique capability in naval operations, potentially setting a new standard for submarine defenses.

With India’s recent selection of TKMS in partnership with Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the Project-75I, aimed at building six advanced submarines, the inclusion of IDAS could be a strategic move is part of India’s ambitious plan to modernize its submarine fleet with air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology submarines. The integration of IDAS would further enhance these submarines’ operational capabilities.

The press release from TKMS and Diehl Defence highlighted that this “globally unique technology” will be available to their customers, suggesting a broad market for this system beyond India. By offering submarines an active defense against aerial threats, IDAS could redefine naval strategies, making submarines less vulnerable and more effective in modern warfare scenarios.
