Ottawa, March 18, 2023 – NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has expressed deep concern about recent events in Punjab. “I am deeply concerned by reports that India has suspended civil liberties and imposed an internet blackout throughout the state of Punjab,” he said in a series of tweets.
Many people are disturbed by these draconian measures because they were used to carry out extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances during the 1984 Sikh Genocide.
I am urging Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government to contact their Indian counterparts immediately to express my concern about the suspension of civil liberties and the safety of Canadians abroad.”
