Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has categorically dismissed reports claiming that China is set to deliver J-35A stealth fighter jets to Pakistan by 2026. In an interview with Arab News, Asif addressed the speculation, stating, “I think it’s only in the media, you know… it’s good for Chinese defense sales.”
The remarks come amid circulating reports on social media and some news outlets suggesting that Pakistan was in line to receive the advanced J-35A stealth fighter jets from China, a move that would significantly bolster the Pakistan Air Force’s capabilities. The J-35A, a next-generation stealth aircraft developed by China, is designed to compete with modern fighters like the U.S. F-35 and is seen as a cornerstone of China’s growing military aviation prowess.
Asif’s statement suggests that the reports may be speculative or driven by commercial interests rather than grounded in any formal agreement between Pakistan and China. “It’s good for sales,” he quipped, hinting that such rumors could be fueled to promote Chinese defense exports.
Pakistan and China share a long-standing strategic partnership, including extensive defense cooperation. The Pakistan Air Force already operates Chinese-made aircraft, such as the JF-17 Thunder, co-developed by the two nations. However, the acquisition of a cutting-edge platform like the J-35A would mark a significant leap in Pakistan’s air combat capabilities, potentially shifting regional dynamics.
No official confirmation of any deal for the J-35A has been made by either Pakistan or China. Asif’s dismissal of the reports aligns with Pakistan’s cautious approach to publicizing sensitive defense acquisitions. Meanwhile, analysts suggest that while the J-35A may not be on the immediate horizon, Pakistan’s deepening defense ties with China could lead to future collaborations on advanced military technologies.
