The Indian Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) in March 2023 for an indigenously designed Long-Range Stand-Off Weapon (LRSOW) to be integrated with the Su-30 MKI aircraft. This marks a significant step forward in India’s self-reliance in developing advanced weapon systems.

Initial reports suggested the LRSOW would be an air-launched cruise missile with a subsonic speed and a range of 1000-1500 kilometres. However, recent developments indicate that the LRSOW will be incorporated into the existing RudraM family of air-to-surface missiles developed by DRDO.

Following the successful development and testing of the Agni-5 MkII, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has turned its attention to the Agni-IV MkII. This upgraded version of the Agni-IV intermediate-range ballistic missile is expected to incorporate several enhancements, including a significant reduction in weight through the use of composite materials.

The Agni-IV, a nuclear-tipped missile with a range of approximately 4,000 kilometres, has been a cornerstone of India’s nuclear deterrence. The Agni-IV MkII is anticipated to extend this range to around 5,000 kilometres, bringing a larger portion of China within its striking distance.

Maritime security forces along the West Bengal and Odisha coastlines revalidated their Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) during the two-day Ex-Sagar Kavach that concluded on Thursday. In West Bengal, all agencies involved with coastal security along the 158 km long coastline, participated in the Exercise that was coordinated by the Commander, Coast Guard Region North East, based at Kolkata.

“The State Coastal Security Operation Center (SCSOC) at Headquarters Coast Guard District no – 8, Haldia, was the nerve centre for the Exercise, which witnessed simulated situations such as hijacking of fishing boats for landing of terrorists, smuggling of contraband, hijacking of ship, planting of IEDs and attacks on vital assets and points along the coast of West Bengal. Besides sea and river patrolling by Coast Guard, Navy, CISF, BSF and Customs boats and coastal patrolling by district police, fishermen watch groups at various places were also activated to act as ‘Eyes and Ears’ for the security forces,” a senior Coast Guard official said.

The Indian Army Headquarters’ Recruiting Zone, Kolkata, said that recruitment of Agniveers from West Bengal in 2024 is highly unlikely as the state government has failed to provide support for organising physical and medical tests for candidates who cleared the online Common Entrance Examination (CEE).

“The first rounds of physical and medical screenings for the successful candidates were to be conducted in July and August at Barrackpore and Siliguri. Despite requests to the Department of Home Affairs, Government of West Bengal, no administrative support was forthcoming for these screenings which are loosely referred to as ‘recruitment rallies’,” said a senior official of Headquarters Recruiting Zone, Kolkata.
