State-owned shipyards Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) are in talks with the Indian Navy that is likely to see repeat orders for the Nilgiri-class frigates, that are currently being executed under Project-17 Alpha frigates (P-17A) program. idrw.org has been told like previous (P-17A) which saw the construction of four Nilgiri-class frigates by MDL and three by GRSE second batch of orders could be the same.
Narayan Prasad, chairman, and managing director, MDL said, talks are still underway and the deal is likely to be announced sometime in 2023-24, ships under consideration are 7 with minor design improvements over its predecessor along with the influx of the latest systems in navigation, firepower, and communications.
It may be recalled that the first two ships of the P17A Project, were launched in 2019 and 2020 at MDL and GRSE respectively and the third ship Udaygiri earlier this year and the fourth ship likely by end of this year, and two ships in 2023 and last in 2025.
