The HAL Tejas, India’s first indigenously developed light combat aircraft, emerged as a symbol of aeronautical self-reliance and a formidable force during Operation Sindoor. Designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Tejas is a multirole fighter built for interception, ground-attack, and aerial combat. Its deployment along India’s western sector during the operation underscored its capability to counter Pakistani air intrusions and maintain air superiority over conflict zones.

The Tejas’ agility, compact design, and small radar cross-section made it ideal for rapid-response missions. Equipped with an advanced electronic warfare suite, including radar warning receivers and countermeasures, it proved highly effective in contested airspace. During Operation Sindoor, Tejas aircraft conducted numerous Combat Air Patrols (CAPs) and Close Air Support (CAS) missions, showcasing their versatility and reliability under pressure.

A standout moment occurred near the Uri sector, where a Tejas fighter intercepted a Pakistani JF-17 Thunder. Leveraging its superior avionics and pilot interface, the Tejas outmaneuvered the JF-17, locking onto the enemy aircraft with its fire-control radar. While strict rules of engagement prevented a direct dogfight, the Pakistani jet retreated, marking a silent but significant victory for Indian air dominance. This encounter highlighted the Tejas’ advanced radar systems, including the indigenous Uttam AESA radar (in select variants), and its seamless integration with modern weaponry.

The Tejas also demonstrated its prowess in night operations. Equipped with advanced night vision sensors and terrain-hugging radar, it executed low-light missions with precision, escorting Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopters delivering critical supplies to forward posts. Its ability to operate in challenging conditions underscored its role as a force multiplier. The aircraft’s compatibility with Indian-designed missiles, such as the Astra air-to-air missile and the Derby missile, further enhanced its operational flexibility, allowing it to engage targets at varying ranges with lethal accuracy.

Operation Sindoor marked the Tejas’ first real wartime engagement, a significant milestone for India’s indigenous defense program. The aircraft’s performance validated years of research, development, and testing, proving its mettle in high-stakes scenarios. With a lightweight airframe, fly-by-wire controls, and a modular design, the Tejas offers a cost-effective yet potent platform for the IAF.
