Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research and Technologies has officially announced the unveiling of their Abhimanyu Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, set for February 10, 2025, coinciding with the opening day of Aero India 2025. This announcement was made by Sameer Joshi, CEO & Director of NewSpace, who emphasized the significance of this event, stating, “This is the official unveiling of the program by NewSpace. We are still looking to work with an end user…”

The Abhimanyu platform is designed as a low-cost, expendable asset in the realm of Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUMT). Its modular design allows it to adapt to various roles including Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR), kinetic attacks, serving as a decoy, and electronic warfare (EW) missions. This versatility positions Abhimanyu as a game-changer in tactical aerial capabilities, offering a cost-effective solution for modern warfare scenarios.

Currently, the Abhimanyu is described as smaller than its more advanced counterpart, the Warrior, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). However, it’s noted as a work in progress, with NewSpace continuously refining its design and capabilities. The focus on creating an expendable system reflects a strategic shift towards concepts of attritable warfare, where the cost of losing a drone is significantly less than that of traditional manned aircraft.

The Abhimanyu’s design philosophy emphasizes intelligence and expendability, aiming to deliver platforms that can be deployed in large numbers for various combat scenarios, thus enhancing operational flexibility and reducing risk to human pilots. This approach aligns with global trends where military forces are increasingly adopting unmanned systems to complement their manned fleets.

NewSpace’s announcement has sparked interest in defense circles, with many eager to see how this innovative platform will evolve and what strategic partnerships it might forge. The unveiling promises to be a highlight of Aero India 2025, showcasing India’s growing prowess in the field of unmanned aerial systems and its commitment to advancing military technology through collaborative and cost-effective solutions.
