While the first Final Operational Clearance (FOC) block, SP-21 at the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)’s LCA-Tejas Division is ready for its first flight this month. idrw.org has learned that HAL will soon also put SP-33 and SP-34 in the assembly rig so that the equipping stage of them begins soon.
HAL plans to deliver 4 (SP-21 to SP-24) by end of March 2020 to IAF upon which foundation for the second squadron will be laid by April next year. 16 FOC block (SP-21 to SP-36) will be handed over to IAF by March 2021 and the first four will be handed over by March 2020. IAF already has inducted 16 fighters in its Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) configuration is with IAF’s 45 Squadron based at AFS Sulur. The last 8 of the ordered 40 Tejas Mk1 split equally into 20 IOC and 20 FOC Block will be its Trainer variant which will go into production from the 2021-22 period.
HAL is close to ink final contract for 83 Tejas Mk1A block with IAF soon which will have many key improvements in maintenance and with additional safety features along with improved electronics and avionics by end of this year. Tejas Mk1A will go into production from 2022 onwards and whole orders for 83 units will be delivered in just over 5 years period.
