Dr. Girish S Deodhare, Director General of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) while speaking in a webinar organized by the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS) said that a lot of discussions were held with the air force and navy to get them to agree on the commonality of three fighter jets that ADA is working so that workload can be reduced on their development and also agree to same systems and subsystems.

ADA is nodal aircraft design agency in India but still has a small pool of manpower resources that are well versed with aircraft design due to which Deodhare explained that work on three aircraft projects was taken up one program at a time so that senior-most engineers get enough time to work on each design before the second team takes over the project after the two-year interval.

Tejas Mk2, AMCA, and TEDBF will share most of the Avionics and LRUs including derivatives of the same Fire Control Radar and engine but each aircraft will also be modular so that it can be adapted for changes of systems and subsystems as per user requirements.


Deodhare explained that the internals of the Tejas Mk1 systems and sub-systems were positioned by designers and engineers without consultation with the maintenance crew that in-turn made maintenance of aircraft bit lengthy and cumbersome. Tejas Mk2, AMCA, and TEDBF will be maintenance-friendly due to inputs taken from the service crew after letting them experience virtual, augmented reality in carrying out repairs of these jets.

HAL is already working on making Tejas Mk1A more maintenance-friendly by carrying out internal changes of the systems and subsystems by making them easily accessible and also reduce 300kgs of dead weight inside the aircraft that was done to manage the center of gravity.
