Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), in collaboration with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), has reached the commercial negotiation stage for India’s ?43,000 crore submarine project under Project-75I. This significant development marks progress in India’s ambitious efforts to enhance its submarine fleet with state-of-the-art technology.
The project, part of the Indian Navy’s Project-75I initiative, aims to procure six next-generation conventional submarines equipped with advanced Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems. These submarines will provide enhanced stealth, extended underwater endurance, and superior operational capabilities, making them a critical addition to India’s maritime defense.
TKMS, a globally renowned leader in submarine design and manufacturing, has partnered with MDL, India’s premier shipyard with extensive experience in submarine construction. This collaboration aims to combine TKMS’s technological expertise with MDL’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities to deliver cutting-edge submarines tailored to the Indian Navy’s requirements.
Once the contract is signed, the first submarine is expected to be operational within seven years, with subsequent deliveries following a phased schedule. This timeline underscores the project’s urgency, given the aging fleet of submarines currently in service with the Indian Navy.
The submarines under Project-75I are expected to feature:
- Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) Systems: These systems allow the submarines to remain submerged for longer durations without surfacing, enhancing stealth and operational efficiency.
- Advanced Combat Systems: Integration of modern sonar, communication, and navigation systems for superior situational awareness and combat readiness.
- High-Endurance Design: Enhanced range and endurance to support extended missions in diverse maritime environments.
- Indigenous Content: Significant focus on incorporating Indian components and systems to promote self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
