The L&T Nexter consortium has introduced the TRAJAN, a state-of-the-art 155mm/52cal towed howitzer, which is now a significant contender in the Indian Army’s Towed Gun System (TGS) tender. This development comes at a time when the Indian military is looking to bolster its artillery capabilities with modern, reliable, and locally manufactured systems.
TRAJAN is based on the renowned CAESAR ordnance, bringing to the table the combat-proven artillery technology currently used by the French Army and several other forces globally. This howitzer has undergone rigorous evaluation by the Indian Army, involving extensive firing and mobility trials across various terrains and under diverse climatic conditions. The system has been tested for its ability to deliver enhanced firepower, showcasing quicker response times, longer range, and improved accuracy, which are critical in modern warfare scenarios.
TRAJAN has seen 40% of its components produced in India even at the prototype stage. This not only supports local economies but also ensures that the system is tailored to meet the specific operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces. The integration of local manufacturing into the development process of TRAJAN underscores a strategic move towards self-reliance in defence production.
With its 155 mm 52 Caliber cannon, TRAJAN offers superior firepower. It can cover larger areas with fewer guns, thanks to its extended range and precision, which are vital for reducing the number of assets required on the battlefield.
The design of TRAJAN allows for quick deployment and maneuverability, essential for rapid response operations. Its ability to be swiftly repositioned after firing reduces exposure to counter-battery fire, enhancing the safety of artillery units.
Recently, the TRAJAN has made headlines by securing an export deal with Armenia, highlighting its international acceptance and the consortium’s capability to compete in the global arms market. This export not only signifies the robustness and reliability of the TRAJAN but also positions India as a potential exporter of advanced military hardware.
