Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) chairman R Madhavan has said that first flight of upgraded LCA-Tejas Mk-1A will happen in 2022 and it is expected it will enter production by 2023. R Madhavan who was speaking in HAL press conference at the ongoing Aero India 2019 also confirmed that since airframe will remain same, the company is treating it has an upgrade rather than a new development.

IAF and HAL are still discussing procurement of 83 LCA-Tejas Mk-1A which is likely to be cleared by end of this year. HAL Chief again confirmed that will be delivering two remaining IOC configured LCA-Tejas Mk1 by end of March and first FOC configured LCA-Tejas Mk1 will make its first flight by October 2019.

Speaking on LCA-Tejas Mk-1 Trainer variant, HAL Chief confirmed all 8 Trainer variants will be delivered in FOC configuration to the Indian Airforce and production will start once 16 FOC configured LCA-Tejas Mk-1A aircraft are delivered by 2020.

Coming to media reports of MBDA refusal to supply Meteor BVRAAMs for integration into Mk-1A, HAL Chief denied Indian Air Force ever asked HAL to integrate them in the first place.
