India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) will begin its sea trials soon and recently Navy’s Westland WS-61 Sea King anti-submarine warfare helicopter became the first aircraft to land on the decks of the INS Vikrant when it was at Cochin Shipyard. Sea trials are likely to be conducted by end of this year and IAC is set to be commissioned into the Eastern Naval Command as INS Vikrant by mid-2022.

INS Vikrant will be able to launch 30 aircraft, including 20 fighter jets and 10 helicopters. The ship will be compatible with the MiG-29K and TEDBF after Sea trial, Naval Air Arm will start trials of the MiG-29K to demonstrate its combat capability in early 2022.

The basin trial of INS Vikrant was completed in November 2020.
