In a demonstration of growing military cooperation between India and Kazakhstan, 15 Kazakh paratroopers are currently undergoing intensive training in the dense jungles of Mizoram, India. This unique training initiative is being conducted at the renowned Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare (CIJW) School, known worldwide for its expertise in jungle combat operations.

The course at CIJW School is designed to equip soldiers with the skills necessary to operate effectively in jungle environments, which are known for their challenging terrain and dense vegetation. The training includes modules on navigation, survival, counterinsurgency tactics, and combat in confined spaces typical of jungle warfare.

The Kazakh contingent, part of their Airborne Assault Troops, is being trained in various aspects such as:

  • Enhanced Observation and Tracking: Learning to interpret the subtle signs of the jungle, from tracking enemy movements to understanding the natural cues for survival.
  • Low Intensity Conflict Operations (LICO): Specialized training in dealing with insurgency and guerrilla tactics, which are often encountered in jungle settings.
  • Jungle Survival Skills: Understanding how to live off the land, manage resources, and maintain health and hygiene in harsh jungle conditions.

The CIJW School has a storied history of training not only Indian troops but also soldiers from various friendly nations, helping them to master jungle warfare, which is often overlooked in traditional military training programs. This exposure provides Kazakh paratroopers with an opportunity to gain insights into tactics, techniques, and procedures that are beneficial for operations beyond their usual cold, steppe environments.

The Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Vairengte has been operational since the early 1970s and has established itself as a premier training center for jungle combat. Its curriculum is rigorous, with a focus on real-world scenarios, ensuring that soldiers leave with practical, battle-ready skills. The school’s training has been pivotal for forces involved in counterinsurgency operations in various parts of India and now extends its expertise internationally.
