In a significant stride towards enhancing its maritime capabilities, the Indian Navy is poised to commission “INS Nirdeshak”, the second vessel of the Sandhayak-class survey ships, on December 18, 2024, in Visakhapatnam. This event marks another milestone in India’s push towards self-reliance in naval technology and operations.

The commissioning of INS Nirdeshak will take place at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, under the aegis of the Eastern Naval Command. Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, is scheduled to preside over the ceremony, symbolizing the government’s commitment to bolstering naval strength. The event will also be attended by senior naval officers and representatives from Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), the shipyard responsible for its construction.

Built in Kolkata by GRSE, INS Nirdeshak is a testament to India’s growing expertise in ship design and construction. With over 80% indigenous content, the vessel echoes the ethos of ‘Aatmanirbharta’ or self-reliance in defence production.

The ship measures 110 meters in length and has a displacement of approximately 3,800 tons. Powered by dual diesel engines, it can achieve speeds exceeding 18 knots, with an endurance of over 25 days at sea.

As a hydrographic survey vessel, INS Nirdeshak is equipped with advanced hydrographic and oceanographic survey tools. Its primary duties include conducting comprehensive coastal and deep-water surveys, mapping navigational channels, and collecting vital data for both defence and civilian applications. The vessel can also support limited defence roles and serve as a hospital ship in emergencies.

The commissioning of INS Nirdeshak not only augments the Indian Navy’s ability to chart and safeguard its maritime boundaries but also plays a crucial role in international maritime cooperation. By mapping the waters with high precision, INS Nirdeshak will contribute to safer navigation, resource exploration, and environmental protection in the Indian Ocean Region.
