Chairman DRDO Dr. G Satheesh Reddy speaking to ” Financial Express Online ” confirmed that Defence Research and Development Organisation developed Fuel Cell-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) System has completed all requisite trials and When the INS Kalvari comes up for retrofitting in 2025, it will be fitted with the indigenous AIP.
DRDO which had demonstrated a Fuel Cell-based Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) System on the land-based prototype now has started work on a module that can be fitted on the submarine when it comes to retrofitting in 2025.
All six Kalvari class submarines from 2025 onwards will be fitted with an AIP system till 2030 that will make the entire fleet much more deadly by enhancing the submerged endurance severalfold. India will be joining an exclusive club of countries like Japan, Germany, South Korea, and France that have demonstrated AIP systems in their submarines.
