After successfully securing a contract in 2022 for 2 40 mm naval gun systems, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s leading defence manufacturers, is set to deepen its collaboration with the Indonesian Navy. Indonesia has decided to procure additional units of the ‘Teevra 40’ naval gun systems for its warships, marking a significant expansion of defence ties between the two nations.

The Teevra 40, developed by L&T, is a modern naval gun system that has become a cornerstone in the Indian Navy’s arsenal, now gaining traction internationally.

Part of the new sales agreement involves L&T providing technology transfer for the assembly of these systems in Indonesia. This aspect aims to promote local manufacturing capabilities, reducing dependency on imports and fostering self-reliance in defence production. The ToT will allow Indonesia to assemble the Teevra 40 guns domestically, potentially leading to cost savings, faster delivery times, and job creation within the Indonesian defence sector.

Here are some key features:

  • Range: With a maximum range of approximately 11,800 meters, the Teevra 40 offers significant reach. For surface targets, its effective range is around 3,500 meters, while for aerial targets, it extends to about 4,500 meters.
  • Ammunition: The system is compatible with various 40 mm/L70 standard NATO rounds, ensuring versatility in ammunition selection based on tactical requirements.
  • Firing Modes: The gun system boasts five firing modes:
    • Single-shot mode for precise engagements.
    • Full auto mode for rapid-fire against multiple or fast-moving targets.
    • Three-shot burst and five-shot burst modes for controlled engagements.
    • Warning shot mode where the gun maintains targeting but fires projectiles at a safe distance, is useful for non-lethal deterrence.
