Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, recently confirmed that the government has granted approval for the indigenous development of two nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs). This significant move highlights the Indian Navy’s growing confidence in the country’s ability to design and produce advanced defense platforms in-house.
Admiral Tripathi also addressed the projected timeline for the SSNs’ delivery, stating that the first nuclear-powered attack submarine is expected to be delivered by 2036-37. This timeline is deemed very realistic, considering the complexities involved in building nuclear-powered vessels from scratch. Following the first SSN’s induction, the second one is expected to be delivered within two years, further enhancing the Navy’s capabilities.
The Navy Chief also pointed out that the SSN project will have a transformative effect on India’s defense industrial ecosystem. The production of these advanced submarines will involve the collaboration of various public and private entities, from the manufacturing of critical systems and components to the integration of advanced technologies. This will not only boost India’s self-reliance in defense but also create numerous job opportunities and contribute to the overall economic growth.
Key areas such as advanced materials, nuclear propulsion, sonar systems, and stealth technologies will be integral to the SSN program, fostering growth and innovation across multiple sectors. The expertise gained from these high-tech projects will also pave the way for future advancements in defense technology, with potential export opportunities for indigenous products.
The indigenous SSNs will provide the Indian Navy with an enhanced strategic deterrence capability, complementing the existing Arihant-class SSBNs. The ability to deploy SSNs will also improve India’s tactical flexibility, offering greater reach and an advanced surveillance capability in the region.
