Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Air-to-Air Missile Astra MK-I developed by DRDO, based on the staff requirements issued by the IAF catering for BVR will be integrated with MiG 29K fighter aircraft by end of this year. HAL is in charge of the program and integration work already has begun with CAD-based simulation being used for validating carriage and separation simulations before actual trials begin.
After Su-30MKI, LCA-Tejas Mk1 has completed carriage and separation trials and the missile will be tested from the aircraft soon as the Transfer of Technology (ToT) from DRDO to BDL for bulk production of the Astra MK-I missile along with all associated systems has been completed that will lead to integration with other fighter aircraft in a phased manner including Mig-29UPG.
Astra MK-I missile is technologically and economically superior to many such imported missile systems and will be replacing Russian supplied R-77 BVR missile across Russian fighter fleet and also be integrated on Tejas Mk1A and Mk2 fleet.
