The Indian Navy has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to bolster its maritime capabilities by 2047, aligning with India’s vision to emerge as a major global power by its centenary of independence. With a focus on self-reliance and indigenization, the Navy aims to commission approximately 94 warships in the next decade, underscoring its commitment to securing the nation’s maritime interests and expanding its blue-water operations.
The Navy’s expansion plans are already underway, with 63 warships currently under construction. Remarkably, 61 of these vessels are being built domestically under the Make in India initiative, reinforcing India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem. The remaining two are being constructed in Russia, showcasing the Navy’s balanced approach to sourcing critical assets.
To further enhance its operational readiness, the Navy plans to seek Acceptance of Necessity (AON) for 31 additional warships. This strategic acquisition will address emerging threats, bolster maritime domain awareness, and solidify India’s naval presence in critical sea lanes.
The indigenization drive is at the heart of the Navy’s vision, with Indian shipyards like Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), and private players playing a pivotal role. Key projects include:
- Project 17A Stealth Frigates: Advanced stealth features and superior weapon systems.
- Vikrant-Class Aircraft Carriers: Strengthening India’s carrier strike capability.
- Next-Generation Destroyers (NGD): Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and weapons.
- Advanced Submarines: Conventional and nuclear-powered platforms to dominate undersea warfare.
As the Indian Navy progresses toward Vision 2047, its focus remains steadfast on achieving a 175-ship strong fleet. This includes aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, submarines, and auxiliary vessels, alongside a robust aviation wing comprising advanced helicopters, UAVs, and maritime patrol aircraft.
