The Indian Navy officals have clarified that it will proceed with the construction of two nuclear attack submarines under Project 77, but the ultimate aim is to have a fleet of six nuclear attack submarines to keep them technological advances and make improvements on each block as per feedback.
Initiated in 2015, Project 77 aimed to develop and build six advanced nuclear attack submarines in three phases with each phase will see development of two nuclear attack submarines each at a time. Once the first two submarines are inducted, the next two will go into production with advancements planned in the next batch.
While the design and engineering phases were completed successfully in 2022, the project has faced budgetary constraints. These nuclear attack submarines, with a submerged displacement of nearly 6000 tons, will be formidable assets for the Indian Navy. The project prioritizes indigenous capabilities, with over 95% of components and systems being domestically produced.
The submarines will be equipped with vertically launched long-range anti-ship and land-attack missiles, both subsonic and supersonic. This armament will provide them with potent offensive capabilities, enhancing India’s maritime security and deterrence.
The decision to proceed with the construction of all six submarines under Project 77 is a significant boost to the Indian Navy’s modernization efforts. These advanced nuclear attack submarines will play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests and projecting naval power in the Indian Ocean region.
