The Indian Navy has added a cutting-edge capability to its arsenal with the induction of the indigenously designed and developed Laser Ordnance Disposal System (LORDS-N). This state-of-the-art system, created by DRDO’s Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences (CHESS), Hyderabad, marks a significant step forward in India’s indigenous defense technology development.
The LORDS-N system is designed for the safe, efficient, and rapid disposal of unexploded ordnance and life-expired ammunition. Its laser-based technology minimizes risk to personnel and enhances precision in neutralizing potentially hazardous materials. The system represents a leap forward in ordnance disposal, replacing older, less efficient methods.
On 28 November 2024, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS), met with Dr. Jagganath Nayak, Director of CHESS, to congratulate him and his team on the successful development and induction of LORDS-N. The Vice Admiral lauded its performance since its deployment, emphasizing the system’s critical role in ensuring operational safety and efficiency for the Navy.
With the LORDS-N system, the Indian Navy has significantly enhanced its capability to handle unexploded ordnance safely and quickly, both in operational zones and during routine maintenance. This capability is particularly crucial for ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment during demining operations and the disposal of old ammunition stocks.
