In a significant move to strengthen defense ties between India and Vietnam, senior officers from Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) gathered today at the Vietnam-India Defence Industry Cooperation Seminar. Held in conjunction with the Vietnam Defense Expo 2024, the seminar provided a platform for these leading Indian defense entities to present their product profiles, capabilities, and visions for future technology collaborations.

BEL highlighted its advancements in defense electronics, showcasing systems like the Akash Missile System, various radars including the Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) and 3D Radar, and the Counter Drone System. BEL’s commitment to innovation was evident as they discussed potential areas for technology transfer and joint development with Vietnamese partners.

DRDO presented an overview of its cutting-edge research, focusing on indigenous missile systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and other advanced defense technologies. The emphasis was on how these could be tailored to meet Vietnam’s specific security needs, showcasing projects like the recent long-range hypersonic missile test.

MDL, known for its shipbuilding expertise, detailed its current naval projects, including submarines and frigates, and expressed readiness to collaborate on naval technology. The presentation included insights into MDL’s capabilities in building sophisticated warships that could be of interest to Vietnam’s naval forces.

BDL focused on its missile systems, illustrating the Akash and other anti-tank missiles, demonstrating how these could be integrated into Vietnam’s defense strategy. BDL also discussed its export capabilities, emphasizing the company’s role in India’s missile defense strategy.

HAL showcased its aerospace technology, particularly in the realm of fighter jets, helicopters, and UAVs. The presentation included updates on the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and its suitability for export markets, alongside potential joint ventures in aircraft maintenance and manufacturing.

This event marks a significant step in the deepening of defense ties between India and Vietnam, especially in light of the shared concerns regarding regional stability and maritime security in the South China Sea. Vietnam, looking to diversify its defense procurement and enhance its military capabilities, finds in India a strategic partner with similar geopolitical interests and a commitment to sovereignty in international waters.
