The Indian Army has embarked on a significant modernization effort to enhance the combat capabilities of its T-72 Main Battle Tank (MBT) fleet by integrating the T-72 CIA (Combat Improved Ajeya) variant with a state-of-the-art Remote-Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) developed by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). This upgrade marks a critical step in bolstering the operational effectiveness of the T-72, a mainstay of India’s armored divisions, ensuring it remains a potent force on the modern battlefield.

The RCWS, mounted on the turret of the T-72 CIA, is equipped with a 12.7 mm NSV Heavy Machine Gun (HMG), a proven weapon system known for its reliability and firepower. The integration of this advanced RCWS enhances the tank’s ability to engage threats with precision while improving crew safety by allowing remote operation from within the armored confines of the vehicle.

The RCWS is fitted with cutting-edge sensors and targeting systems, including:

  • Day Camera: Provides high-resolution imagery for enhanced situational awareness during daylight operations.
  • Thermal Imager (TI): Enables effective target acquisition and engagement in low-light and adverse weather conditions, ensuring round-the-clock operational capability.
  • Laser Range Finder (LRF): Delivers accurate distance measurements to targets, improving the precision of the NSV HMG and facilitating effective fire control.

These features collectively enable the T-72 CIA to detect, track, and neutralize threats with greater efficiency, particularly in dynamic and high-threat environments.
