In response to an increase in attacks targeting unarmored military vehicles by Pakistani-backed terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Army is planning to procure additional Tata Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carriers (WhAPC). These vehicles are expected to enhance the safety of troops operating in high-risk zones while providing robust mobility and protection during combat operations.
The Tata WhAPC is a 4×4 Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) designed with multi-role capabilities. It features mine protection and is built to serve various operational needs, including Mine-proof troop transport for counter-insurgency operations. Special response vehicles for law enforcement and security forces. Escort and protection vehicles for convoys in conflict zones.
The vehicle has already demonstrated its capabilities globally, being deployed in UN Peacekeeping Missions and by Indian security forces for domestic operations. Tata’s WhAPC offers a range of configurations tailored to specific mission requirements, such as Infantry Carrier, Command Post and Ambulance Rescue These configurations are adapted from the Quick Reaction Force Vehicles (QRFV-Medium) already in service, incorporating enhanced features for increased protection and operational efficiency.
Jammu and Kashmir continues to witness sporadic acts of terrorism, including ambushes and IED attacks targeting military personnel. The induction of WhAPCs will significantly bolster High levels of mine and ballistic protection shield soldiers from IEDs, small arms fire, and shrapnel.
