The Indian Army is set to significantly enhance its artillery capabilities with the commissioning of six additional Pinaka rocket regiments by 2026, a move aimed at countering growing threats from China and Pakistan. These modern, indigenous multi-barrel rocket launchers (MBRLs) are replacing outdated Soviet-era systems, such as the BM-21 Grad, and will strengthen India’s deterrence along its volatile borders.
With four Pinaka regiments already deployed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China and the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan, the addition of these regiments marks a critical step in modernizing India’s artillery arsenal, driven by a Rs 2,580 crore contract signed in August 2020 with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), Tata Power, and Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
The decision to fast-track the induction of six new Pinaka regiments came in the wake of the violent clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, which heightened tensions along the LAC. The contract, signed just months later, underscores India’s urgency to bolster its firepower in response to China’s aggressive posturing and Pakistan’s ongoing military modernization, including its acquisition of Chinese-made artillery systems. The deal, valued at Rs 2,580 crore, involves the supply of 114 launchers, 45 command posts, and associated equipment, including batteries and follow-on support, to equip six regiments. Each regiment typically comprises 18 launchers, capable of delivering devastating salvos with high precision.
A defense source confirmed the progress of the project, stating, “Out of six regiments, two have been raised and deployed. We have received equipment for two more regiments, and the training of soldiers will begin soon.” The source added, “We are also expecting that the launcher systems for the remaining two would be delivered to us by the end of this year or beginning of 2026 if everything goes as per the plan.” This timeline reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to rapidly operationalize these regiments to address evolving threats in the northern and western theaters.
