The Indian Army has placed an order for an additional batch of ARKA air defense systems, previously known as Igla-S, to be supplied by Adani Defence & Aerospace. This move underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities through indigenous manufacturing, aligning with the “Make in India” initiative.

The ARKA (Igla-S) is a man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS) designed to counter low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Renowned for its reliability and effectiveness, the system is a critical asset for the Indian Army’s air defense strategy. The decision to rename the Igla-S as ARKA reflects India’s push to localize and brand its defense equipment, fostering self-reliance in military technology.

Adani Defence & Aerospace, a key player in India’s defense manufacturing sector, will produce these systems at its state-of-the-art facilities. This order follows the Indian Army’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air defense arsenal, with the ARKA system expected to enhance operational readiness against aerial threats. The collaboration with Adani Defence & Aerospace also highlights the growing role of private sector companies in strengthening India’s defense ecosystem.

This procurement is part of a broader strategy to replace older systems and ensure that the Indian Army remains equipped to address evolving security challenges. The locally produced ARKA systems are anticipated to provide cost-effective, high-performance solutions, further solidifying India’s position as a hub for advanced defense manufacturing.
