The Ministry of Defence, Government of India, has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify interested vendors for the indigenous manufacturing of 40mm Anti-Drone Ammunition under the “Make in India” initiative. This marks a significant step in India’s efforts to bolster its defense capabilities and reduce reliance on imports while fostering self-reliance in the defense manufacturing sector.

The RFI invites participation from both Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and private vendors. The objective is to identify potential manufacturers capable of producing 40mm Anti-Drone Ammunition that will be compatible with existing 40mm L/70 guns. The ammunition is specifically designed for the neutralization of drone threats, addressing a critical aspect of modern warfare where unmanned aerial systems are increasingly being used for surveillance, attacks, and other tactical operations.

As per the RFI, prospective vendors are required to comply with the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, including its stipulations on indigenous content. A minimum of 50% indigenous content is mandated, ensuring that the majority of materials, components, and software used in the manufacturing process are sourced locally. This aligns with the government’s focus on enhancing domestic defense production and fostering collaborations within the Indian defense ecosystem.

The vendors are also requested to submit detailed technical specifications, product brochures, and related literature about the ammunition they intend to offer. These submissions will provide insights into the vendors’ capabilities and ensure the proposed solutions meet the operational and technical requirements outlined in the RFI. Broad technical parameters and requirements have been detailed in Appendix A of the RFI document.

This initiative emphasizes the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to engaging with the private sector and DPSUs to develop advanced and reliable defense equipment domestically. By leveraging indigenous resources and expertise, the project aims to strengthen India’s defensive posture against emerging threats, particularly in countering the proliferation of drones in military and non-military scenarios.

Vendors interested in participating in the project are encouraged to review the RFI and respond with their proposals. This project represents an important opportunity for Indian defense manufacturers to contribute to a strategic area of national security and advance the vision of a self-reliant India in the defense sector.
